CREATURE MARK
SPRING 2025 DESIGN AESTHETICS II
Challenged with creating a visual identity design that translates a creature’s physical, behavioral, and personality traits into a clear graphic mark.
The objective of the Creature Mark is to transform a creature’s natural form into a clear visual language using the fundamental elements of design. The goal is to communicate distinct physical, behavioral, and personality traits while translating the creature’s natural form into a visual language.
RESEARCH
I studied the tree frog, a small and agile amphibian that climbs the trees of the amazon and wards predators off with their bright skin. These traits formed the foundation for translating the frog into a visual identity.
BEGINNING SKETCHING
Beginning to quickly create sketches in different poses allowed me to become more familiar with the animal’s structure and the movement I aimed to portray. This allowed me to better understand its form, proportions and personality and how I can use shape and line to put together an image of a frog in the most simple manner.
DIGITALLY RENDERING
After sketching, I composed digital ideations using only point, line, and shape to create the form. Throughout the process, I was redirected to explore alternative methods to create depth and shadow with point and lines.
SIMPLIFYING FORM
After going through the ideas I had to choose one to pursue to clean up and turn into a more fluid form.
I chose to get rid of certain parts from my original design because I believed that without them the form of the frog would be understood just as well. I wanted to simplify the design down because have too much figur ground reversal was negatively affecting how well the design was communicated.
INTRODUCING COLOR
After choosing my final form design I chose to introduce color, I went through options in grey scale, using the nature of the tree frog of having bright colored skin and climbing trees, and embracing a stereotypiccal frog nature of being green and associating with water.
FINAL
My final design highlights the nature of the frog. I wanted to emulate the naure of the frog through the smooth design of the agile creature. I learned how to create a design throuhg line and shape and how to take a complex real life image and simplify it into a clean and effective mark.
