LP REDESIGN; CENSUS DESIGNATED

FALL 2025 PHOTO DESIGN II

Use photography to communicate a concept inspired by a style of music and a pre-existing album title and artist. Photography must work in harmony with the title to convey the mood, attitude, and concept of the record compellingly.

The objective of my design is to transform the albums message and the original interpretation of the design into something else while maintaining that original message .

RESEARCH

To begin my research I listened to the album, Census Designated by Jane Remover to interpret without bias what the album sounded like to me. I read the lyrics and what the artist said the album was to her.

Census has an incredibly dream-like sound on the ear. The imagery of the album also emphasizes nature heavily, which is best highlighted on the album cover with Jane standing in front of an abandoned house in the middle of an open field, which is vast and empty barring the structure. I immediately thought to the promo for the album where Jane is in the house on the cover with her face covered in blood. This symbolizes a lot of the lyrics of the album, which focus on an unhealthy and sometimes unnerving emotional connection with somebody.

THE PHOTOSHOOT

After my research I chose to use a large sheet of glass and with the reflection and use of lipstick I created a surrealist photo with double exposure using the glass. This helped me create the dreamlike feel of the music and feel hazy while still being able to see the face in the image.

FINALIZING DESIGN

This phase explored multiple visual approaches, testing compositions, textures, and photographic techniques. Through trial and refinement, I narrowed down ideas that conveyed the album’s mood.
